Junior ski races a boost to racer potential

Junior skiers aged 14 years and under enjoyed a great day of ski racing at Turoa on Saturday with more than 90 entrants in the two run giant slalom event. Saturday' s race was the final in a three race series and is designed to help develop the potential of New Zealand' s top up and coming ski racers by providing international ski race conditions. The results on Saturday certainly showed there are more Annelise Coberger's and Simon Wi Rutene's on the way through the ranks. The last ten days has seen storms bring over a metre of new snow to Turoa taking the average snow base to over four metres - more than was ever recorded during the record snow year of 1 992. But Saturday, competitors came from all over the North Island and were greeted with a clear cairn blue skies day, excellent snow conditions and a fast but challenging course. Results J5 women 10 years and under: 1st Alana Riding, 2nd, Kathryn Young, 3rd Nicole Sutton. J5 men 10 years and under: 1st Nicholas Geoff, 2nd Nathan Johns, 3rd Matthias Hollenstein. J4 women 1 1 and 12 years: 1st Amanda Endicott-Davies, 2nd Connie Richards, 3rd Michelle Simpson. J4 men 11 and 12 years: 1st Raymond Geoff, 2nd Casey Teat, 3rd Andrew Simon. J3 women 13 and 14 years: 1st Jemma Brooking, 2nd Erika McLeod, 3rd Emma McLeod. J men 1 3 and 1 4 years: 1 st Rhys Boberg, 2nd Jamie Lyver, 3rd Angus Howden. Overall results The overall results from the three race series were: J5 women 1 0 years and under: 1st Alana Ridings, 2nd Kathryn Young, 3rd Brook Wells.
