Restricted fire season starts
The Lake Taupo Rural Fire District Committee have issued a reminder to the public of the restricted fire season which will be in force from 1 October 1994 to 3 1 April 1995 in Taurewa Forest, Rotoaira Forest and Lake Taupo Forest (adjacent to the Kaimanawa Forest Park). A fire permit is required before lighting a fire in the open within any of the areas within the Rural Fire District and may be obtained free of charge from New Zealand Forest Managers Ph: 07-386-8757, Turangi. Fire permits for areas in and within one kilometre of all reserves, national park, forest park and other land administered by the Depart-
ment of Conservation may be obtained from your nearest Department of Conservation office in Turangi, Taupo Whakapapa or Ohakune. Fire permits for all other land within the Taupo District may be obtained from the Taupo District Council in Taupo or Turangi. People spotting wild fires
are asked to dial 111. This summer may be another dry one, according to weather forecasters and the public are urged to be responsible when lighting fires. If the public are unsure of the fire permit requirements they can ask the Department of Conservation or T aupo Di strict Council for assistance.
Staff from Forest Managers and the Department of Conservation will shortly be undertaking pre-fire season training to enable them to effectively deal with fires when they occur. Training will continue during the fire season to ensure that staff are current with the systems and equipment and can respond quickly to fire.
