Waimarino rookie NZ's top merino shearer

Waimarino shearer Chris Hancock is New Zealand's new merino shearing champion for 1994. He took the title at the New Zealand Merino Shearing Championships held in Alexandra recently, in his first competition final. His triumph came after two days of intense competition where he showed top quality shearing through the preliminary rounds. Despite being well beaten for speed by the 1 992 champion, he won through having a low penalty count, but just 0.281 of a point ahead of his closest rival. Chris, aged 28, is the son of Don and Moreen Hancock of Raetihi Road. He attended Ohakune Primary School and Ruapehu College before working in the ski industry and as a shearing contractor. He started shearing at 13 in Ron Frew's shed under the guidance of Rangi Elers , a well-known Waimarino shearer. Chris has shorn extensively in Hawke's Bay, Australia and the South Island where he has become proficient in the highly skilled work of fine wool shearing. His win is the highlight of his career so far, and he now goes on to represent New Zealand in the Australia/New Zealand championships.
