Ngauruhoe eruption likely in 10 years

In a TV 3 news item last Friday evening a vulcanologist forecast a "major eruption involving Mt Ngauruhoe within the next five to ten years". The news item was about the recent eruptions in Rabaul - and referred to the Pacific 'Rim of Fire' on which New Zealand is situated. The vulcanologist reminded viewers that Mt Taranaki (Egmont) was also considered to be an 'active' volcano though it hadn't erupted for some time but this, he said, made it all the more dangerous in that the next eruption would probably be a major one. He was quite re-assuring about Mts Ruapehu and Tongariro - where seismic monitors are also installed - but he predicted that Mt Ngauruhoe' s seismic activity indicated a major eruption within the next decade.
