Best Turoa day since 1992
Saturday 10 September saw the largest crowd of skiers at Turoa Ski Resort for two seasons with 4300 on the southern Ruapehu slopes. Skiers awoke to clear skies and 40cm of fresh snow deposited after two days of stormy weather. This was the final weekend of August School Holidays with many wanting to get one last ski in before heading home. The chain restriction on the mountain road was from the 9km due to the snow falls over the previous 48 hrs but this did little to deter the fast-
arriving skiers in search of fresh powder skiing. "The cars were arriving in a long, steady stream and our upper parking areas were completely full in the early morning," said mountain manager Grant McMaster. "The overflow of cars were parked in lower carparks further down the mountain road." In the latter part of the morning cloud increased and moved onto the mountain limiting visibility, however skiers enjoyed superb powder skiing for the day, he said.
Sunday was described as 'horrible' , with wet, misty conditions. About 800 people made the most of the last day of the school holdidays on Turoa. Whakapapa' s upper slopes were on hold for a time on Saturday but later cleared. Facilities were open most of the weekend. Turoa hosts the PowderZone snowboard event this weekend, with dual slalom and freestyle events.
