Ruapehu chase St Cuthberts in college champs
St Cuthberts College is at the top of the points table after the first day of racing in the New Zealand Secondary Schools Skiing competition, being held at Whakapapa this week, 19, 20 and 21 September. Just two points behind is Ruapehu College on 76, with Kings College two further back on 74. Individual placings, in the slalom event were: Junior Women, 1st Natasha Wells, Rangitoto College; 2nd Elizabeth Shands, St Cuthberts; 3rd Michelle Ly ver, Epsom Girls Grammar. Senior Women, lstMinttu Viitanen, Hutt Valley High; 2nd Monique Ricthie, St Cuthberts; 3rd Kirsten Stevens, Wellington Girls College. Junior mens, 1 st Scott Mazey, Tauhara College; 2nd Simon Douglas, John Paul College; 3rd Daniel Richards, Ruapehu College. Senior mens 1 stTodd Haywood, Ruapehu College; 2nd Josh Rowe Palmerston North Boys High, 3rd Craig Gladding Auckland Grammar. The competition has been running since 1980 and is hosted by Ruapehu College, sanctioned by the New Zealand Secondary Schools Sports Council. The main sponsor is Salomon. One hundred and twenty-four schools are represented with some 617 competitors making this the largest race held in the southern hemisphere. Competitors are divided into four divisions. Junior men and women, senior men and women, the larg-
est total is 1 76 in the senior men' s di vision. Entries fromco-educational schools must have both sexes represented and e very team must contain at least one junior. On Day One each division' s competitors complete a giant slalom course in the Valley T-bar area. Day 2 is a dual slalom event with skiers paired within their divisions by time order from the previous day. On Day 3 a team competition "fun day" is being sponsored by The Junction Ski Shop. Events include snow sculpting and dual slalom racing - pairs according to skiers choices. Last year saw a win by Kings College scoring 92 points, Saint Paul's Collegiate were second with 91 points. Three schools shared third place scoring 81 points. The schools were Westlake Boy's High, Wanganui Collegiate and Samuel Marsden Collegiate. There are high hopes for Ruapehu College this year. Representing the College in the senior men's division are Todd Haywood and Daniel Richards, Daren Triggell, Shannon Hays and Kay Murdie represent the junior division. Reserves are Rachel Hays and Scott Nation who came first in the recent under 1 5 ' s national races. A social evening for participants is being held at Ohakune' s Hot Lava on Monday evening.
