Spring into it!

jring's got a lot going for it on Ruapehu most years, but this year is especially here's so much snow both Whakapapa and Turoa that they are looking to have t skiing right until closing day — at this stage 24 October on Turoa and ibly Christmas on Whakapapa. Tie warm, longer spring days are great for a more relaxed style of ski day. Y ou make the most of the morning runs while the day warms up, then choose to d off trail to find that magnificent spring snow that hasn't been chopped up all and sundry. Or you can laze around for a snow picnic and take in the odd t as it pleases you. With much shorter lift queues you can often get enough skiing in a few hours, sn head down the mountain if it gets too slushy for comfort (some love it — pecially snowboarders). Off mountain there's heaps to do too — tennis, golf, mountain biking, shing, rafting, hiking, sightseeing. Events Starting this Saturday is the Inaugural Montana Ohakune Spring Ski Fest /hich runs until 2 October. There's all sorts of events both on and off the nountain — see inside for details. At Whakapapa there's the North Island Secondary School Skiing Championships 19-21 September; the Rossignol/DB locals' races on 22 & 29 September; the Coca Cola North Island Ski Champs 24-25 September, a telemark course on 26-30th. In October there's the BMW Open Masters Ski Champs (1-2 Oct); the Deutz Jazz Band on 22nd; and the Great Gatsby Ball at the Chateau on 22 October. On both sides from 1-9 October there is the Salomon Learnto Ski Week. See Page two for details.
