Boarders show skills in slalom and half-pipe

The second annual Powderzone Snowboard Jam was held at Turoa over the weekend. The races consisted of slalom courses on Saturday and freestyle events on Sunday. Numbers on Saturday were slightly down due to poor weather but 22 entrants braved the conditions to enter the competition. Thanks go to the competitors and crew for putting up with the conditions. The freestyle section was competed in a half pipe constructed by Turoa staff and volunteer workers. Again due to the bad weather the half pipe was only completed the morning of the race. Very lucky winner of the Burton snowboard spot prize was Rick Tamaka who also won the spot prize of a snowboard last year. A fortunate win this year as he

snapped his board only a few days before the race. According to Rick he believes in the power of thought and could turn religious! Maybe next year he won't have to rent a board to compete. Results: Mens Slalom: lst Nick Ridings; 2nd Michael Dodds; 3rd Antoine. Womens Slalom: lst Hayley Knights; 2 Michelle Kopp; 3 Terry Cronin. Junior Slalom lst

Ben Scarf, 2nd Joe Hassle; 3 Toby Perkins. Junior Women winner Kath Abbott. Half Pipe event: Men: lst Matt Groube, 2nd Alex Macdonald, 3rd Jason Millar. Women lst Ylona McGinity, 2nd Hayley Knights, 3rd Kirsti Barwick. Junior Men lst Gareth Mowat, 2nd Ben Scarf, 3rd Crosby Webb. Junior Women lst Heidi Godfrey, 2nd Kath Abbott.
