Ohakune teachers tackle technology
Ohakune teachers will have hands-on experience this week with some of the latest readily available information technology during a series of workshops being cO-ordinated by the Telecom Education Foundation. The workshops, designed
to encourage teachers to make use of information technology in the classroom, are being held at the Palmerston North College of Education, 5-7 September. The recently published New Zealand Draft Curriculum, Framework for Tech-
nology, includes informa-" tion skills amongst the essential skills to be learned by all students. Students need to develop skills in using information as part of their knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for lifelong learning. The workshops include
practical exercises using computers for e-mail and audio-graphics, faxes and audio-conferencing. Audiographics is a popular system for distance learning as both teacher and student can communicate simultaneously through an interactive computer programme and telephone conversation.
This is the second year that the free workshops have been provided for teachers to practise new ways of using computers and communication equipment for classroom teaching. New technology is becoming critically important to the delivery of quality education in New Zealand.
