Cold Kiwi bike rally runs smooth

By

Michele

Monaghan

Waiouru came up with some cracker weekend weather for the 20th annual popular Cold Kiwi motorcycle rally organised by the Ruapehu Motor Cycle Club, based in Taihape. With over 1 100 tickets pre-booked organisers looked forward to a good turn-out, and were well-rewarded with a grand total of over 1760. The harsh tussock countryside of Six Cross, north of Waiouru, (the highest point on the Desert Road), was covered in tents and there were bikes of all shapes and sizes trying to do all sorts of things. The burn-out always proves to be a popular event and the crowds roared appreciatively as each rider took their turn. Cold Kiwi has been a yearly event since 1972, apart from a twoyear break from 1982 after a fire was accidentally started and a ban enforced by the Ministry of Defence. Things have gone smoothly since the rally' s re-instatement in 1983 so the 'Cold Kiwi' continues, said organisers.
