Railcar to Taihape celebrations
Main Trunk Rail Ohakune is running the Silver Fern Railcar this weekend to help mark the Taihape Centennial celebrations. The MTRO Silver Fern Railcar will complete a railway display depicting rail travel from the past to the present. A 114-year-old steam F locomotive will be running trips to Mangaweka, steam train KA945 will be running from Paekakariki at 12.30pm, and the vintage Da diesel locomotive will also be on display. MTRO president Bob Norling invites the Waimarino people to join with them on this special day, Saturday 10 September, to ride in the railcar leaving Ohakune at 9am and returning at 5.30pm, with photo stops in remote places. The cost per seat will be $6.60 return and lunch boxes will be available at $6.50 each. The following local business have made this rail car trip possible: Hot Lava, Berrys Bookshop, Ohakune TV Electrical, Ohakune Hotel, Ruapehu Lions, Mainstreet, Ruapehu Bulletin and Bee Dee's. Events planned for the day at Taihape include a reenactment of the first European settler's arrival, the Grand Centennial Parade, hangis, Golden Oldies rugby with the 'Toobmugs
versus the Ruapehu Rascals. Also planned are wood chopping, vintage cars, spinning displays, steam traction engines and steam
sawmills, the DB Clydesdales, Cobb & Co Stagecoach, bullock team and wagon, tiger moth rides, horse drawn vehicles,.
