Accident blocks ski traffic

A man was flown to Waikato Hospital with serious injuries after an accident on the Ohakune Mountain Road on Sunday. At approximately 3.45pm a Toyota Corolla collided with theTuroa sewage truck on a bend 600 metres north of the Ohakune Ranger Station. The car had crossed the centre line and smashed into the underside of the front of the truck. Both vehicles were extensively damaged. The truck driver was shaken but uninjured in the accident, police said. He had removed the injured driver, the sole occupant, from the car and administered first aid, before ambulance staff, police and the Ohakune Volunteer Fire Brigade arrived. The man suffered facial injuries and a broken leg The accident blocked the road, causing a traffic jam of skier's car several kilometres long. It took until after 5pm before the road was cleared, police said. Mountain manager Grant McMaster said there were about 870 cars on the mountain on the day. Mr McMaster said people had to realise the Ohakune Mountain Road was a two-lane main road with its own special problems and that they must take care.
