Challenge goes out to boarders
A field of more than 150 snowboarders is the aim of organisers of the inaugural Triple Challenge on Turoa in October. The competition, starting Saturday 8 October, includes a dual slalom, a halfpipe riding event and a boardercross. Prizes, including cash, will total $6000. Competitors can enter all three or a minimum of two of
the events. The exciting spectacle of one-on-one racing in the Hot Snowboards Dual Slalom will be run on the race course near the top of the Giant chairlift. Building the half-pipe for the Killer Loop Halfpipe competition is expected to start early this month — part of the new Turoa snowbaordpark. (Boarders may be asked to help with the shovels!) Riders will be judged on style, height of jumps, types of manoeuvres and overall impression. Organiser Neil Pollett said they will all be good to watch, with spectators able to see all of the halfpipe from one spot. The Brightstone Cider Boardercross sees 4-6 rid-
ers race from near the entrance to the Glacier to below the Fingers. This is an elimination event with the first one over the line in the final declared the winner. On the subject of winning, as well as aiming to provide competition for the better riders, organisers want to encourage all to have a go. Hence the move to offer extensive spot prizes as well as prizes based on performance.
