Turoa opens up new ground
Turoa has installed a rope tow to get skiers back up to the new High Flyer Quad chairlift after skiing the Mangaehuehu Glacier or Triangle runs. The new tow runs around 50 metres saving skiers an up-hill tramp. Recently the Triangle was groomed allowing less advanced skiers to experience this run. Until now only skiers with the ability and will to handle tricky traverses have bothered to take in these awesome areas (awesome in the old and new meaning!). In conjunction with the new rope tow this should provide some great skiing. Turoa now has six Kassbohrer groomers operating on the field. The extension of the fleet from four to six helps Turoa deliver a more reliable and consistent product, says mountain manager Grant McMaster. He said apart from the Triangle the same areas as last year are being groomed but to a better standard. At a replacement cost of $350,000 the Kassbohrers represent quite an investment. Despite the extensive grooming operations and the installation of the new rope tow, the Moro Race Tbar is still not operational. Mr McMaster said the lift should be running within the next two weeks. The lift has been out of commission due to being buried by snow which has caused damage at the return station. This is the third time the lift has been dug out and represents the equivalent of digging through 90 feet of snow to access it! The damaged lattice work has been flown out and is now under repair.
