Cancer group seeks funds
The New Zealand Cancer Society is holding its annual Daffodil Day appeal
this Friday. Taihape Cancer Support Co-ordinator Jocelyn Fannin said that unlike a lot of others, the Cancer Society receives no funding whatsoever from the government and relies solely on donations for its income. She said money raised locally stays within the region apart from a small amount that is put towards research. Daffodil day is run mainly by people who have had cancer, contrary to what Mrs Fannin said the general public tended to think which is that cancer victims are people who have died.
She said the daffodil represents hope and new life as people can and do survive cancer. Money raised goes towards supporting cancer victims and their families through the tough times, through the times when the main breadwinner may not be able to work. Daffodils are now the international symbol for cancer societies and bunches of daffodils will be available in Waiouru from all service stations, the bookshop, the chemist and Collective Thinking.
