Lower numbers enjoy great ski conditions

Turoa and Whakapapa ski fields enjoy ed art unsurpassed start to the August School Holidays, with clear skies and cairn conditions and moderate crowds and queues. Whakapapa Around 5500 people visited the slopes both days of the weekend, enjoying groomed trails right up to the Top O' the Bruce. All mountain facilities were operational. The weekend' s 'Prawns On Piste' barbeque, consisting of king prawns and DB Export Dry, was well received by the crowds, as was the Crater to Lake Challenge that began at the Crater Lake on Saturday, fin-

ishing at the Great Lake Centre in Taupo (see separate story this Bulletin.) Whakapapa' s Coca Cola School Holiday Programme gets underway this week, with events held every fine day. Featuring among the line-up are (for the children) treasure hunts, lollie scrambles, clowns and face painting, sumo wrestling, snow golf, snow groomer and ski demo days. Turoa Around 3500 people took to the slopes on Saturday and again on Sunday. Turoa's Movenpick Swiss Days were a great hit with the crowds of skiers who enjoyed hundreds of

giveaways of Movenpick ice cream both days. Swiss dancers also entertained the crowds at the base area of the ski field. Another hit was the DB Export Dry Bouncy Boxing staged on the mountain, with a large number of people getting into the 'swing' of things and taking part. Turoa's 'Fun For All' Course (in the vicinity of the Yahoo run) is open for business. Also open for more experienced skiers is the triangle area - a steep half kilometre run that has been recently groomed and made more accessible for advanced skiers. This weekend the Bacardi 'Race A Mate' event is on again, with some great prizes of Bacardi Tshirts, bags and hats up for grabs (and of course, Bacardi beverage.) Also happening this weekend is Turoa's Skiwi School Holiday Programme, with two hours of free supervised fun for 5 - 1 0 year olds at the top of the Parklane Chair dailv.
