Racing now, on the squash court!

Racing fans got their money's worth at the Ohakune Squash Club's Race Night, held on Saturday. Betting on the human horses got underway at 8pm, with such races as the Growers Gallop, Teachers Trot and The Serious Sportsman's Handicap Hurdle staged throughout the night. The two-legged steeds got into the spirit of the event accordingly, with the majority coming up with some extremely imaginative costumes. Among these were the teachers' 'little hoarse' regalia, with participants parading in lozenge-type attire. Around 130 tickets were pre-sold for the evening, which organisers say was a reasonable turnout, consider-

ing the multitude of other events on the same night. These included the Ruapehu College Senior Ball and Celebrity Snooker Night that featured Dene O'Kane. In excess of $ 1 200 was raised from ticket saies, tote and bar takings and raffles. The doubles bet, where punters picked the winner of races four and seven, was unstruck but had it been would have netted some lucky person $132,000. Organisers are hoping that the race nights will become an annual fund-raising event and that squash enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike will continue to support it as enthusiastically as they have.
