Trails tavern result of revamp

A $100,000 revamp has restored a Whakapapa landmark and given it a new lease of life. 'Trails at Whakapapa', formerly the Whakapapa Tavern, received a much-needed face-lift at the beginning of the season and remained open throughout the renovations. General manager of The Grand Chateau, Chris Griffin, said the new name denotes the overall package of skiing, hiking and outdoor activities available at Whakapapa and replaces the out-dated 'tavern'. Patrons will notice the newly re-designed bar area that has been doubled in size and now sports a trendy canopy. The impressive collection of club badges was retained to adorn the walls, but now share space with a growing collection of ski-related paraphenalia, including poster and trail maps. Plans include installing a mini museum of ski memorabilia also. 'Trails' boasts seating for 150 with a new set of furniture. Painting the exterior will take place over the summer months. Another new concept is their brand-name 'Trails Pizza' - an in-house pizza outlet that is sure to be extremely popular with the resident locals and visitors alike.
