Avalanche dogs at Whakapapa
Nine police dogs and their handlers completed four days of training with staff at the Whakapapa Field Centre. They were lucky enough to strike good weather and spent one day on the plateau with their dogs carrying out training in the search for and recovery of avalanche victims. They finished the week with a demonstration at National Park School. This is the third year a full complement of local dogs have been trained in the park. The dog handlers come from Taupo, Hawkes Bay, Wanganui and Palmerston North.
