Young racer closer to Olympic goal

An aspiring Olympic skier has been helped closer to his goal by a recent scholarship awarded by Turoa Ski Resort. Ohakune' s Daniel Richards, 14, was awarded the 1994 Turoa Race Team Scholarship earlier in the season, in recognition of his outstanding ability as an up-and-coming skier. The scholarship is awarded annually at the discretion of Turoa' s general manager Angus Grimwade, to an athlete or intending athlete of the Turoa Race Team. The recipient receives a free season' s pass and a free full race team programme. Mr Grimwade said the scholarship was awarded to Daniel in recognition of his strong development in the last few years. Daniel was a member of the Turoa Race Team in 1993 and went from strength to strength through the season. He was placed first in the Coca Cola North Island Champs Slalom and Giant Slalom for J3 skiers and . had a string of successes leading up to these events, with firsts in the Diet Pepsi Series, Bhanski GS, and Fresh Up GS, all staged at either Whakapapa or Turoa Skifields. He enjoyed three weeks' training in Japan at Shiga Kogen with other members of TASCI in 1993 and this Turn to Page 5
