Squash race night fun fund-raiser
The bets are on for the up-and-coming Ohakune Squash Racquets Club's Race Night, when human 'horses' take to a make-shift track in the name of fund-raising. President JohnLaurensen said this Saturday night should be one to remember, if last year's effort was any indication. It is hoped that the event will become an annual fundraiser, although considerable work is involved in its preparation, he said. Profits from the event will go towards current squash club projects. The doors (and the bar) open at 7pm with the first race running at 8pm. Six 'horses', consisting of co-operative and co-opted individuals, negotiate the hurdles and penalty squares throughout the pre-determined track, the race
being declared over when the first two horses cross the finish line. With the help of the 'Best Bits' guide which gi ves a very loose description of the form of each racer, punters get the chance to have a 'flutter' and perhaps make some money. A number of 'starters' have been awarded handicaps dependent on age, physique and past performance on the track. Spot prizes and alate supper round off a cheap night' s entertainment
