Park phone service aid to trampers
People planning trips into the back country of the Tongariro National Park can now ring a 24-hour answerphone service for up-to-date track, avalanche forecast and weather information. The service has been arranged by the Department of Conservation at Whakapapa and will provide people venturing into the back country with valuable information. The number to call is (07) 892 3728. While DoC often issues avalanche hazard warnings at times when the risk is particularly high it isn't always possible to do this, according to senior conservation officer Liane Campbell. Having the answerphone will give people access to this kind of information at all times, she said. "Essentially you're responsible for your own safety inthemountains. We hope people will use the 24-hour service, and be better informed about conditions before they set out". If people aren't sure about their level of experience and whether they should venture into the back country, they are still advised to check with DoC's duty ranger or ski patrol before they go.
