Anniversary coincides with Bosnia departure

By

Queen Alexandra's Mounted Rifles (QAMR) recently celebrated their first anniversary as the regiment is today.

Officer Commanding, Lieutenant Colonel Neville Reilly said the regiment had a long history which began about 130 years ago as a cavalry unit in the Taranaki

New Zealand wars. "We can't hide our past, but we can draw strength from it. We're warriors of one nation and one unit." Lt Col Reilly said he was

honoured by the presence of the Waiouru marae, which took the opportunity to wish those going to Bosnia well with prayer and song. The first anniversary celebrations included an open day which allowed wives and partners to drive M113 armoured personnel carriers and become more

familiar with some of the equipment used by soldiers. Lt Col Reilly said that the anniversary provided the last chance for soldiers in the unit to get together as a whole before the deploymentto Bosnia. QAMR will not come together as a unit again until commitments in Bosnia are fulfilled.
