Busy Ruapehu ski weekend
Turoa With a 2m snow base on the upper field, skiing at Turoa was plentiful on the weekend. The resort enjoyed its busiest day for the 1994 season on Saturday, with around 3500 people visiting the slopes. Snow conditions were hard packed on trail and icy in patches off trail. All facilities were operational with the exception of the JumboT-Bar and Moro Race T-Bar. Strong winds of up to 50 knots closed the field on Sunday however. Yesterday's Turoa Card $1 Day attracted many skiers, with Turoa running out of laminates by mid-morning. The Turoa Card that can be purchased from the Infomation Centre entitles the bearer to reduced prices for skiing, ski hire and lessons (during ski school ski weeks). Details are available upon application. The Turoa Ski School intends to hold a Mumm Champagne Demo Day this Sunday, weather permitting. Whakapapa Around 4000 people converged on Whakapapa Ski
Area on Saturday, to enjoy kilometres of hard-packed snow on groomed trails. Visitors on Sunday numbered around 1500. All facilities were operational with the exception of the Far West T-Bar that is expected to operate this week, weather permitting. The field currently has a snow base of 170cm with groomed trails to the Top 'O The Bruce. The first of the season' s ski races gets underway at Whakapapa this weekend, with the running of the Evian Giant Slalom and the Haensli GS (see story this Bulletin).
