PM flies high on new chairlift

The High Flyer Quad Chairlift is the na'me of Turoa' s new lift, announced by the Prime Minister Jim Bolger when he opened the new $2m skifield facility on Saturday. "Every year we are seeing more overseas skiers on our mountains bringing not an inconsiderable percentage of our $3 billion tourist dollar," said Mr Bolger in his speech to those gathered at the opening which included a large number of patient (and some not-so-patient) skiers. "Last year international skiers spent $177 million in New Zealand," he added. Skiers itching to ride new lift Mr Bolger read the mood of the crowd who were getting restless after several previous speakers and a short delay in starting the ceremony. He joked that he would keep his speech down to an hour and a half, but spoke quickly, moving rapidly to the plaque-unveiling and ribbon-cutting. "I am advised that there hasn't been a bad year for snow since I've been prime minister," he said in his short speech. He added that while the skiing analogy of going down hill fast did not please him with regard to his

government, the idea of riding high on a chairlift suited well. Named the High Flyer The new lift was named the High Flyer in keeping with the fact it is Australasia's highest chairlift, rising to 2075 metres. It starts on 'The Terrace" to the east of the top of the Movenpick and affords skiers spectacular views of the frozen waterfall and Hamilton Face. Ian Kean, chief executive of the Tourism Board, said Turoa, the central North Island and the economy in general would benefit from the development. He said Turoa was one of New Zealand' s best kept secrets but that the "time is right to market offshore". As part of a joint promotion in Australia with the New Zealand Tourism Board, Turoa has already seen a marked^^P^^g increase in the number of visi- a; tors from overseas with interestalsoshownfrom (0^5 other Asian mar- g OI kets, Japan in ^ particular. wyO Skis
