Fountain correction
• In your report of the Ruapehu District Council' s annual plan, published in the Ruapehu Bulletin on 5 July, I note that the proposal to site a fountain and picnic area on Council Reserve land on Mangawhero Terrace was purported to have been proposed by me. This is entirely incorrect. This proposal was made an published in the Wanganui Chronicle at an earlier date and most certainly not by me. My letter to the Waimarino Community Board made comment on the issue, and my proposal was that this matter be given careful thought for the reasons stated in my letter (Mainly concerning traffic . hazards - Ed) before being implemented. Bea Barnes (Mrs) EDITOR REPLIES: We'd like to quickly pass the buck on this one to the Ruapehu District Council. We accurately reported on the meeting and from the council's annual plan agenda, which outlined "a proposal for a show piece fountain ... received from Mrs B M Barnes, Ohakune". It seems the council officers didn't detect the irony in your statement: "I am sure than an ornamental fountain and picnic tables would be warmly appreciated by our visitors provided that such amenities were firmly bolted into solid concrete" andtookittobeinsupportof the proposal. It was interesting to note that the report on "your" proposal presented in the agenda contained the very concerns, namely those regarding the potential traffic hazards near the site, that were in your submission. As I recall, the Mangawhero T errace fountain/picnic/play area proposal has been around since the Waimarino District Council days.
