College recycling scheme helps river study

A cheque for $642.70 from glass manufacturers ACI Glass Ltd, was presented to representatives of Ruapehu College' s Form 6 chemistry at a special function held in Ohakune on Saturday. On hand to present the cheque on behalf of the sponsors was Prime Minister Jim Bolger, who congratulated the college on obtaining the funds which will be used to purchase new lab and field equipment. Included is an oxygen sensor, thermister and oxygen probe, to be used in a proposed study of the Mangawhero and Whangaehu

Rivers. Pupils will measure pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen levels in the water to establish a baseline of conditions, so that any changes in the catchment areas can be monitored. One of the catalysts for change may be the proposed hydroelectric development on the Whangaehu River. ACI representati ve David Armstrong, said that Ruapehu College was one of 16 colleges around the country to benefit from sponsorship that is in tum gleaned from recycling.
