Student seeks eruption memories

People who can remember the 1945 Mount Ruapehu eruption are being sought by a Massey University science student. David Johnston needs the information about distribution and thickness of ash, and in particular its effect on Taupo, to complete his doctorate. The last major series of eruptions of Mt Ruapehu took place between March and November 1945. Ash falls from these

eruptions were reported as far afield as Upper Hutt and Whakatane. Crop damage was reported by Ohakune market gardeners and the army was forced to move more than 700 vehicles from Waiouru military camp. Anyone with information can contact David Johnston at the Department of Soil Science, Massey University, Private Bag, Palmerston North.
