Raetihi gardeners report

The Raetihi Garden Club held its monthly meeting at the home of Joan and Harry Brown recently. A great turnout of members that included many new faces were welcomed. A quick meeting was held, followed by a finger lunch enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Guest speaker was Adrienne Maru spoke on exhibiting flowers. Adreienne then proceeded to judge the monthly competitions, explaining as she went what she was looking for in each section. Results: Single bloom, 1st, D. Harper; 2nd, D. McNie; 3rd, L. Graham. Spike or cluster: 1st, L. Graham; 2nd, K. Journeaux; 3rd, T. Hansen. Shrub: 1st, D. Scarrow; 2nd, J. Tod; 3rd, B. Harper. Polly: 1st, K. Journeaux; 2nd, B. Hiscox; 3rd, J. Tod. The special prize of the day was won by Eliane Billet who is a newcomer to the district. The trading table was a great success and it is hoped that this can become a monthly occurrence. July's meeting is a pot luck lunch at the home of Dawn and Graeme Harper in the Ruatiti Valley. Guest speaker will be from the Department of Conservation speaking on pests, ie Dppossums, wasps and invasive plants.
