Rest home appeal slow but steady
Fundraising for the proposed Waimarino Rest Home may be progressing slowly, but support for the project is overwhelming, according to Trust mem-
ber Dorothy Scarrow. Mrs Scarrow said the committee still has a considerable way to go to raise the estimated $450,000 needed for the project.
"It is a lot of money for a small community to provide, but the entire community is 100 percent behind it", she said. The shop in Seddon
Street to raise money for the Waimarino Rest Home is manned five days a week by volunteers and sells "anything and everything", including crafts, clothing
and baking. "It is very much community-owned". Since its inception it has also become a popular drop-in spot for residents, she said, adding that owner George Chan allows the Trust to use the shop free of charge. Mrs Scarrow voiced concem that a number of elderly residents have been forced to leave the area due to the lack of facilities. The funding of beds for the elderly at the Waimarino Health Centre was also no longer a consideration she said, as funding no longer existed from the Crown Health Enterprise. The trust has its Annual General Meeting next Wednesday 13 July at the Waimarino Club in Raetihi. Members of the public are invited to attend and join in discussion that will include the siting of the proposed rest home.
