Record start to Ruapehu snow season

. Mount Ruapehu ski fields started their 1 994 season with a rocket this week, with Whakapapa kicking off with a 149 centimetre

base on the upper field. Whakapapa marketing manager Scott Lee said they had had the earliest start to the ski season - Saturday

18 June - in over 10 years. In the three days to Tuesday 28 June 50 centimetres of snow had fallen and more cold weather with heavy

snow showers down to 500 metres were forecast. Open at the time of writing for beginners was Happy Valley, the

Cindertrack Platter and the Valley, Knoll Ridge and Waterfall T-bars are open for intermediate and advanced skiers. The company hoped to have the Waterfall Express skiable

by the weekend (2 July). Snow conditions during the week were packed, groomed powder on trail with variable conditions off trail with pockets of wind blown powder.

"It really couldn't be better especially with the Primo Taupo Winter Fest starting this weekend. It's shaping up to be another great season," said Mr Lee.
