Winter festival 'Hottest Week of Winter'

The temperatures may be down, but the action in the Lake Taupo Ruapehu area during the first week of July will definitely be hot. In fact the annual Winterfest programme, timed to coincide with the mid-term break for most schools, is being dubbed the Hottest Week of Winter in the central North Island. From 2 to 10 July, the Lake Taupo district comes alive with a host of fun and adventure activities specially designed to entertain

visitors to the region. This year's will be the fourth Winterfest Week, with the hardy annuals such as the Barkers Mountain Thunder Polar Plunge, Montana Snow Queen contest, Galliano Hot Shot Grand Ball and Pedigree Pal national husky racing being joined this year by some entertaining new activities, among them a Drag (as in dress) race, the General Motors Clash of the Kids, drive-in movies and Boy o' Boy, a take-off of the Aus-

tralian television show. All the major centres in the region — Wairakei, Taupo, Turangi, Tokaanu and Whakapapa — are hosts to Winterfest Week activities, so no matter at which end of the lake visitors are located, there is plenty of on and off-mountain fun and excitement ahead. Winterfest in the Lake Taupo district is aimed at family groups wanting to take a break from the winter blues and to participate in a week of fun activities.

The district' s location in the centre of the North Island makes it easily accessible to everyone resident in the Top Half, permitting day trips for specific activities, or as part of a longer holiday break. The Winterfest programme ties in on and offmountain activities and given the comprehensive programme, promises to be the best yet staged. Primo Winterfest 94 — definitely a week not to be missed.
