Greenie help for Falls track
Task Force Green workers were instrumental in the recent completion of the Taranaki Falls Track at Whakapapa in the Tongariro National Park. Completion of the track was made possible through a combined Department of Conservation and New Zealand Employment Service effort, with N.Z.E.S. providing workers and total funding of the project. Conservation spokesperson Liane Campbell said the Department is very pleased with the results. The project she said, was finished under budget and within six months. So pleased was the Department that
another four Task Force Green projects are in the pipeline for the park during this financial year. Task Force Green workers - all local people who had been unemployed for six months or longer - started work on the track in November under the direction of DoC employee Paul Edhouse. The task involved realignment of around 1500m of track, plus top-ups and general tidying up of other areas. The group also benefitted from a series of skills courses run by DoC, including one covering basic chainsaw usage and fire training in the park.
