Cold temperatures make for great snow at Turoa
A break in the weather enabled Turoa Ski Resort to open for business on Tuesday 28 June, with mountain staff touting it as being worthy of an early opening. 1.2 metre base Marketing manager Joanna Savage said the field has received over 50cm of new snow in the last 3-4 days, making for excellent coverage on the upper slopes. The 1.2m snow base and coverage is on a par with the same time last year's early season, she said.
Excellent skiing can be had from top to bottom, although skiing from mid-field to base is marginal in places. T-bars running Facilities operating are: the Alpine Meadow Platter lifts 1 and 2 for beginners, Movenpick Quad Chair, Giant Triple Chairlift, Bacardi High Noon T-Bar, and the New Quad Chair that ran for the first time on Tuesday. Work is continuing on the Wintergarden Platter Lifts, Moro T-Bar and Jumbo T-Bar to have
them operational by mid-term break. The Jumbo T-Bar may be operational in time for the weekend, depending on weather conditions. Cold temperatures experienced over the past few nights have created snow conditions similar to those experienced at fields in the Northern Hemisphere. "The powder snow is really light and fluffy," said Joanna. "People coming down say it is great. I haven't had a chance to get up there yet but I'm itching to try it."
