Welcome Waimarino signs approved

The W aimarino Community Board last week approved a proposal by the Winning Waimarino committee to have 'Welcome' signs erected at the entrances to Raetihi and Ohakune townships.

'Welcome to Historic Raetihi' signs (green on yellow) will be positioned at the northern and southern approaches of SH49, and at the approach on the Raetihi-Ohakune Road. A series of white-on-blue symbolic signs will also be positioned at Raetihi ' s SH4 intersection and at the Pipiriki Road intersection, with a further double-sided sign located near the Police Station on Raetihi-Ohakune Road. Mainstreet co-ordinator Sue Allomes told the board that the committee is also currently investigating directional signage for Ohakune, in consultation with the Ruapehu District ■ Council and Transit New Zealand. The board approved the committee' s proposal that the threeexisting 'Welcome to Ohakune' signs be repainted green and yellow (the Ruapehu District Council' s colours) and that exist-

ing vegetation be removed from around two of the signs, with more appropriate planting taking place. Mrs Allomes cited the ' Welcome to Ohakune' sign and accompanying planting situated opposite Ohakune' s Post Shop as a good example of enhancing the entrances to the town. Board member John Compton suggested that weed eradication around the signs be made part and parcel of the council' s urban spray programme, with Task Force Green staff implemented to carry out the work. Funding for alternative route signs to be sited at Waiouru - 'Alternative Route North' , 8-Mile Junction Te Kuiti - 'Alternative Route South', and at the Tohunga Road Junction west of Ohakune, had already been approved via committee funds, Mrs Allomes said.
