Ohakune water works woes
The Ohakune Fire Brigade was called to Ohakune' s water treatment plant at midday on Friday to help mop up a leak that occurred overnight. The brigade pumped a large amount of untreated water from a trench dug by contractors who had, earlier in the week, discovered a faulty join in the supply line from the intake to the treatment plant. Residents were asked to conserve water last week due to work carried out by contractors prior to the installation of a new treated water bypass line. The new line will enable treated water to be supplied direct from the treatment plant in the event of maintenance of the reservoir. During the excavations however, an existing joint was found to be leaking and had to be replaced. Contract superviser Allan Geerken said a temporary hook-up was made using materials on hand, supplied by Ruapehu Construction Limited. A more permanent repair will be made when materials on order from Auckland arrive. Mr Geerken said residents shouldn't experience too many disruptions to their water supply as the supplies currently in the reservoir will be utilised until such time as the part is permanently replaced.
