Monty Paul
Cancer has claimed the life of Monty Paul, Waiouru Primary School caretaker of 13 years. The man who whistled and sang wherever he went, was farewelled at a tangi on Matau Marae in Levin. Two hundred Waiouru people paid their respects at one of the largest tangis ever held on the marae. "He would have touched the lives of thousands. His rapport with the children is probably the shining thing about his existence. He cared very deeply for the children here," said principal Tauri Morgan. "He was totally family oriented and often spoke with pride about his mokopunas". "He was a very commu-nity-minded man who got himself involved with the community at large. He was not overly committed to the military, but he was to ordinary people, to Waiouru itself," said Jo Pohatu, a close friend.
