Earthwatch
The installation of a digital datalink has been completed between the Wairakei Research Centre and the Institute of Nuclear Sciences observatory at the Chateau. This now enables the centre to record seismic activity from the Tongariro Volcanic Centre at Wairakei. To mark this there has been a small increase in the amount of seismic activity in the Tongariro region. Volcanic tremor associated with Crater Lake, Mt Ruapehu has also increased along with lake temperature. Earthquakes were felt at Taupo on 16 May and the largest registered M2.7 on the Hinemaiaia seismograph. Later in the month residents living near Lake Rotoma also felt several small earthquakes. These were located by the BOP Volcano-Seismic Network along the western boundary of the Whakatane Graben. There have been no reports of eruptive activity at either Ruapehu or White Island volcanoes. However the level of the lake within Wade Crater at White Island has fallen about 5 m in early June.
