Water shutdown for Ohakune
Ohakune will have a taste of what faces Auckland on Saturday (18 June) when a planned water supply shutdown takes place. The shutdown is to allow Taumarunui Excavators and Drainage Ltd to connect the new water main bypass into the system. The bypass will allow water to be fed directly into the mains from the treatment plant in the event of having to take the storage tank out of commission. Strange water properties have faced Ohakune consumers lately, some due to weather conditions and some due to repairs to the main. Some Ohakune residents recently complained of aerTurn to Page 4

The aeration goes away if the water is left to stand for a few minutes. Ruapehu Construction Limited staff opened some fire hydrants in the affected area to remove the entrapped air. Earlier, consumers may have noticed chlorine in the water. Due to weather conditions the raw water was high in 'colour' which cuts down the transmission of the ultraviolet light so that the sterilisation is not complete. Because of this, the back-up chlorination system was tumed on. Meanwhile, the council reports that the Raetihi Water Supply work in Seddon Street is 98 per cent complete. At the time of writing its activity report (7 June), the council said the work outstanding consisted of sealing the excavations carried out on the road and footpaths, and the removal of fire hydrants and hydrant boxes from the old main.
