Ohakune traffic problem up for discussion
Waimarino Police proposals to alleviate winter traffic problems in Goldfinch Street near the Clyde St intersection will be the subject of a meeting Wednesday night. The police have proposed that turning right into
Clyde Street be banned to relieve congestion, but Clyde Street businesses opposite the park are against this proposal (see letter at right). While the Waimarino Community Board has supported the proposal, the
police still intended to consult with retailers, said Sgt Bob Evans. Ruapehu mayor Garrick Workman said the matter had not yet been put to the district council - the body that will make the final decision.
Supermarket proprietor Alan Murdie said he had asked the police to look into the problem and that he could not see that the Clyde Street businesses would be affected. He said other ideas were not supported such as making Goldfinch Street a mall,
or making it one-way. He said he would be happy to have his carpark entry-only at Goldfinch Street with an exit onto Ayr Street if corner block owner Peter Richards agreed. Mr Richards said such a sgheme was part of his long-term plan
