Mtn Road vandalism dismays

Ohakune Department of Conservation staff are sickened by the senseless vandalism of Mangawhero Lodge and toilet facilities located on the Ohakune Mountain Road. Conservation officer Karen Hawke said every window in the lodge was broken by vandals on a late-night smashing spree overnight Friday. The toilet block in the Mangawhero Clearing camping grounds was also vandalised with most of the windows broken. "It was obviously someone who knew the area well", she said. Also to be struck by vandals was Turoa's grader shed and an administration building on the lower field, plus a vehicle parked in the Waitomo Falls carpark overnight. Officials estimate the damage to be close to $2000.
