USA for a year

By Michele Monaghan The United States will soon be home away from home for Terina Abbott. Terina, a student of Ruapehu College, leaves Waiouru for her 12 month journey early August. The decision to take the 'Youth for Understanding Student Exchange' will mean Terina will miss out on her Sixth Form Certificate year (half a year this year and half a year next). She said she will be learning constantly by being in another place and living with different people. "Hopefully having an American school year under my belt should count for something," she said. Time is ticking down and Terina still doesn't know where in the States she' 11 be living. She said she should find out more at the end of June. Time is also running out as far as fundraising is concerned. Terina isbusy writ-

ing to prospecti ve sponsors. "If anybody would like to sponsor me and they haven't contacted me, please ring 06-3876 997." The RSA Darts Club is sponsoring Terina by donating the profit from three raffle nights and Turner's Bookshop will be paying her for working in the shop. Terina is on the hunt for any odd jobs people could give her. "1*11 find time to do them," she said. Terina has written to various local businesses and firms and said she is a bit disappointed at not getting many replies as yet. Terina is also a keen baby-sitter and lists one of her interests as spending time with children. There will be several trips on offer when she gets to America. Terina said she would like to take advantage of them if her financial situation lets her. Twelve months is a long time away from home, es-

pecially when the only places you've been are Waiouru, Papakura and Linton.
