Waimarino Forest harvest starts
Harvesting trees from the Waimarino Forest is to start this year. Winstone Pulp International general manager Dave Anderson said yesterday one contract cutting gang is to start felling this year, with probably an added one each year until production reaches full volume in about four years. He said because of the steep terrain, cable logging techniques would be employed and, as this has not been used in the area before, they would need to gain experience. This was the reason for starting with one gang, to settle into the system and build up the experience. A clause in the contract with the lessors stipulates that descendants of the landowners, three local Maori Incorporations, must be given the employment opportunities in the forest. Mr Anderson said how this will work is yet to be discussed with the Incorporations. Two thirds of the land is owned by the incorporations and one third by Winstone Pulp International.
