Bears go picnicking

The Teddy Bears' picnic held in Waiouru last week went off really well. "It was absolutely brilliant," said Jenny Ryan. Jenny said she had a lot of ideas for the picnic and it was her 'baby', with the help of the others including the Waiouru drop-in centre committee. Cookie Bear was there courtesy of Griffins Hudson, handing out lollies to the 100-plus children who went to the picnic. Jenny said they were concerned about the turnout as it was a very cold day, but as everything had been planned for indoors attendance was good. There was only one disappointment: the Jolly Jumper inflated castle was late arriving due to transport problems. Once it got there the kids "jumped continuously for two hours." There were free lollies and chippies donated by Caltex and the Army Garrison Institute. Popcorn and drinks were very reasonably priced. There was a story-teller, two clowns and a lady who broke out the guitar for a sing-a-long. 16 Field Regiment helped by decorating the hall with camouflage nets. Entries for the colouring competition were displayed on the walls and completed the decorations. Winners of the competition received scrapbooks, pencils, pens, crayons and stickers. The winners were: five and under Alex Dawson, 6-7 yrs Becky Fothergill and eight and over, Jessica Marama. The winners were judged by Denise Turner of Turners bookshop. Turners were the sponsors of the colouring-in competition and the winning Turn to Paee 2

Colouring-in is not in the current early childhood learning philosophy 'They try to teach them to be creative," said Jenny. Consequently a few entries were- received where the children had drawn and coloured their own teddy bears. Westpac Waiouru donated a bear that was given away in a 'guess the name' competition. About 10 children got the name right (Biggles). Samuel Foster won the bear after having his name drawn out of a hat.
