Quiz competition blown away by Short Fuses
Brain strain was the game's name at the Wanganui Motors Turoa Tumblers annual quiz night held at Turoa Lodge last Friday night. Twenty six teams of four pitted their wits against each other for the honour of knowing the most trivia, answering 10 lots of 10 questions. General knowledge tested ranged from who is vice president of the United States to who sang "King of the Road", from what do the six New Zealand test cricketers who debuted with a century have in common, to where is Taupiri. Short Fuses took first place with 85
points (out of a possible 100), and the Mad Butchers took second place off Rat-a-Tat-Tats (both on 83) in a play-off, the first team to name the singer and song (Shouldn' t You Oughta B e In Love by Dave Dobbyn) played taking the placing. Some entertaining protests livened the evening. The organisers had to replay one song, 24 Hours from Tulsa by Gene Pitney to prove it wasn't actually Down in the Boondocks. And there was much debate over the floral emblem for Wales. Some said it was the leek while a certain Welsh librarian who looks after the youngest of gymnasts who wishes to remain gnonymous, said it was the daffodil, and that a leek wasn' t a flower. Howlers from the night included an answer to the question "who is Whizz that plays rugby league". Some (t)wit answered that it was Whizz Whiley, Grizz's leagueplaying brother. "Wendy when she met Mark" was someone's answer to the question "who said 'I came, I saw, I conquered'." And howler answers to "who is vice president of the United States" was put as Dolly Parton, Madonna and Hillary Clinton. Mickey Mouse and Gariick Workman got two votes each.
