Ladies go over the wall
Abseiling was this month's activity for partners of soldiers in Queen Alexandra' s Mounted Rifles (QAMR). About 25 ladies braved the 190 foot jump off the Moawhango dam wall. Guided by Major Rob Hoult, Director of the Army Adventure Training Centre, 'adventure seekers' put their trust in the ropes and found out what adrenalin can do for the body. Joining the ladies was John Mawson, Colonel Commandant of the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps. Diana Giddens did most of the organising for both the abseiling and the high rdpes course (last month's activity). "Both of those things appealed to me so I organised them," she said. "It was another successful day". QAMR wives and partners recently formed a committee to organise monthly events for spouses. ai "A happy family equals a happy sol-
dier," says Major Alan Johnson, 2IC of the regiment. The committee will organise monthly events with input from all partners. As well as organising activities, the committee will keep track of newcomers to the regiment, making sure they've got enough wood, telling them what happens around the place and generally making them feel welcome in Waiouru. Activities planned include a shopping trip to Palmerston North on 7 May. A 'shadow your husband' day will happen some time during the school holidays, and will involve dri ving armoured vehicles and possibly a shoot of some sort. The June activity will probably involve climbing the rock wall in the Waiouru gymnasium "as long as they want it" says Major Johnson. The committee will be meeting to discuss ideas on possible activities for July through to November and a newsletter should be delivered shortly.
