College promoted in Waiouru

Chaplain Sherri Weinberg (Madre), Waiouru parent representative on the Ruapehu College Board of Tmstees, is spearheading a new initiative aimed at raising the image of the college in the Waiouru area. A night of "surprise and challenge" is in store for parents accepting the invitation to attend a get-together on 28 April. Personal invitations have been sent to all Waiouru parents with students attending Ruapehu college. Madre said she hoped she hadn't left anybody out and advises that "dress of the day" is sports gear. Parents will meet at the Waiouru community centre at 7.30pm. Madre has been on the board of trustees since February and together with student representative Joanne Barclay, they've "brainstormed" ways of trying to bridge the gap between parents and children. Madre said they (the board of trustees) are accessible and are there as a link between the college and the parents. "The college offers so much that's good," said Madre. Things like alternative programmes for students preferring the "practical stuff' said Miss Barclay. "Shearing, mechanics courses, things for those not academically orientated". Madre said the college has a high academic standard. "I'm extremely impressed with thecomputerroom, and the home economics room is just a dream". Students have a real pride in the school and Miss Barclay said there is no vandalism or graffiti. Madre and Miss Barclay are planning a social function of some sort once a term. It is hoped the functions will help parents, board members and teachers get to know each other and open the lines of communication. Ruapehu College recruited only five or six third formers out of apossible 24 who left Waiouru Primary School last year.
