Relief for river users
Rafters, kayakers and anglers will be relieved to learn that toilets have been installed by the Department of Conservation at two popular recreation spots alongside the Tongariro River. The new toilets are located next to the Blue Poel and at the Red Hut carpark. Both areas receive heavy use from anglers, rafters and kayakers. "With tens of thousands of people using the area each
year, we realised there was a desperate need to have toilet facilities," said Dave Lumley, Field Centre Manager at DoC's Turangi Office. The new toilets are designed to be as environmentally safe as possible. A sealed vault prevents sewage leaching into soil and a pipe at the rear of the toilet helps keep odours to a minimum. The new toilets are also designed to allow wheelchair access.
