Diversity key to Womens Day success

Twenty-five women attended a hands-on workshop run by the Waimarino Womens' Group during the weekend. The theory of financial planning and marriage law, held at the Lions Den in Ohakune on Saturday morning, gave way to practical courses in truck driving, trailer backing and wood-cutting on a neighbouring farm property after lunch. Wanganui lawyer Cathy Flynn was on hand in the morning to answer queries, in particular those dealing with de facto relationships. It was of particular interest to the group to discover that the law often does not recognise a de facto relationship, thus a partner may have few rights regarding

jointly-acquired property. Another item of particular interest concerned the importance of making a will and the associated legal procedure. Hamilton financial planner Muriel Dunn lectured the group on sound financial planning, including money management, debt repayment and retirement saving. Mrs Dunn is a regular guest adviser on Radio Pacific's talkback. Manoeuvering a big Barrett and Taura-owned stock truck was the highlight for most of the participants during the afternoon session. Coming a close second was driving a three tonne truck donated by Aiine and Ian Roke for the day. Turn to Page 2

FROMPAGEl The women also had the opportunity to sharpen up backing skills using both a tandem trailer and one with a short tow-bar. Tradesman Paul Dekker demonstrated chainsaw safety , maintenance and use to an attentive audience. The next workshop is scheduled for 11-12 May in association with Waimarino Livestock, featuring the pros and cons of livestock sale and an actual auction situation. Those interested in taking part can contact Di Pritt, phone (06) 385 8016, to reserve a spot. Future ideas for courses include firearms safety, photography, interior decorating, wine-tasting and a visit to a wool scouring plant.
