Chips fly at Raetihi

The first Axeman's Carnival to be held in Raetihi for a number of years took place in the carpark of the Raetihi Cosmopolitan Club on Easter Sunday. Support from the Wanganui Axeman's Club gave local axeman an opportunity to show the crowd

their skills. The youngest entrant on the day was a three-year old boy who, with a few more years of practice, looks set to be a force to be reckoned with, judging by the enthusiasm he showed. The 'Heartland' TV crew were filming at the carnival, with footage to be shown in the series later in the year. A presentation took place after the competition. The results of two of the events were as follows: 12 inch standingfinalhandicap: 1st, Anton McKay, Wanganui; 2nd, Jock Bentley,

Masterton; 3rd, Dave Hawkins, Rotorua; 4th, Graham Rasmusson, Waikanae. A Grade championship: lst, Martyn Petley, Wanganui; 2nd, Anton McKay, Wanganui; 3rd, Graham Russmussen, Waikanae. It is possible that the carnival could become an annual event as organisers were very happy with the support from local people. A series of photos of the event will be on display at the Raetihi Information Centre for people to view and place orders.
